CHAPTER I

Background of Study

Nowadays, teachers and students are completed by technology development in their learning activities. The world has changed, and we are as a teacher should follow and upgrade our abilities to deny ancient or traditional teachers paradigm.  This statement is suitable with the condition of the writer. The writer is a teacher in senior high school and has observed her students as the research object.

As we know, students in the senior high school are in puberty exchange. Puberty typically begins at 10 or 11 years old. This puberty encompass their psychology, social, and their emotional changes. Students who are in puberty period need more attention, affection and finding their characteristics. They are trying to be a role model or trendsetter for others. Additionally, in 21st century they change faster directly proportional with technology development.

In 2022, we are served many kinds of application in the smartphone. A massive of social media types such as twitter, instagram, snapchat, even tiktok, are mastered by senior high school students. They are two times faster than the teachers and greatly upgrade themselves. These social media are so amazing and entertaining the students. Besides, they are in puberty period; they want to show up their selves.

In conclusion, those problems are a big challenge for teachers. The problems appear as follow first, the puberty. As we know, puberty exchange is a transition from child to be adult. One of the important changes is emotional responses more unpredictable. This may in turn affect how they feel and behave at school. Second, a massive technology development is mastered by senior high school student and they are not fully maximizing the utilities of technology. They only impress by media social contents without using this media in the right way. They want to be admired by others and even during learning activities in their class, most of all students turn on their smartphone. Because of that, their attentions are not fully in the materials and teacher. Consequently, the writer attempts to apply student center learning method by maximizing technology development. SCL or student center learning as a way to support students in understanding what and how to learn. It was designed to let students identify – on their own – what to learn as the critical core for understanding how to learn.

How is student’s interest in their learning activities process by applying SCL method?

To know student’s interest in their learning activities process by applying SCL method.

CHAPTER II

Discussion

  1. Discussion

According to Kendra Cherry on her article website, learning is a relatively lasting change in behavior that is the result of experience. It is the acquisition of information, knowledge, and skills. In the learning process, students attempt to pay attention with the subjects, encounter information, should transfer and coordinate what they have learned, store them into memories, and apply.

In presenting the subjects, teacher has a challenge how the materials are transferred to the students memories. One of the important is student’s impression with the material. As a teacher, it is forbidden place the students as passive object. In this context, the application of SCL (Students Centered Learning) is needed.

Based on the book entitled Student Centered Learning and Teacher Centered Learning by Suvriadi Panggabean and teams, SCL is a method in learning activities where the students as a trendsetter or a center of attention, and teacher as the facilitator to gain a main goal, a maximum study effort. This is suitable with the writer’s problem especially a learning process in the senior high school.

In the previous description, the students of senior high school are in a puberty method and they are in the middle of high technology development. By understanding the case of the problems, the writer attempts to apply SCL method in her school. The writer maximizes the utilities of the student’s smartphone, that in their gadgets are not only for fun but also gadget is fun for learning. As we know, students in the puberty period have emotional uncontrolled. As a teacher, filling the students want in the subject is very important. By asking what they want, students could develop their potencies to establish their competencies in active learning and collaborative process.

As an example, writer applied in language learning by using Kahoot as media. The writer has a role as a facilitator for the material of the subject. The students are exciting while practicing the learning process by using Kahoot application. Besides that, another example by using TikTok. Students could present the materials by showing their unique videos.

From this description, there are some advantages of SCL method as follows:

  1. Establish small group discussion
  2. Imagination development by role playing
  3. Students have a chance to be involved in learning activities and communicate their idea by coordinating what they have learned.

CHAPTER III

Conclusion

In the conclusion, we can know that being learner-centered in learning process focuses in what the students learn, how the students are learning, how the materials or the subjects store in their memory with a good quality. The first way is attempting to find what the students want and needs in the subjects, asking the students to communicate what they have learned.
